Mandatory Paid Sick Leave Passes House Committee
A bill that would require all Illinois employers to offer at least 5 paid sick days a year has passed House Committee. The Healthy Families and Workplaces bill was introduced in February. The bill is moving more quickly than bills typically do in the legislature.
Economic Opportunity Committee Chair Mary Flowers is confident that the bill will pass the House. It has not been introduced in the Senate yet.
The bill would apply to part time workers who work at least 20 hours a week or more. The bill has 36 co-sponsors. If the bill passes the house, it is likely to pass the Senate as Democrats hold a “supermajority” in the Senate.
After that, it would be up to Governor Bruce Rauner to either sign or veto the bill. His office has stated that the bill is “an unfunded mandate on job creators that will give businesses another reason not to invest in Illinois or to pack their bags and move away.”
If he vetoes the bill, it could give ammunition to his opponents to unseat him. However, it he signs the bill into law, he could lose much of the support he garners from the business community.
